Language Learning Hints

  • Set realistic goals to form part of your already existing routine
  • Get comfortable with making mistakes
  • Keep a sense of humour!

Most busy people need to slot their learning into their daily routine. I suggest you do a brainstorm and be creative. For example, some people find they learn well listening to our CD in the car on the way to and from work. One of my students has word lists stuck in her bathroom which she reads when brushing her teeth. Another student has notes all over the inside of her car! Someone else keeps lesson notes next to his bed to grab before sleeping. ALSO...

Particularly good is to keep a little pocket notebook of your chosen phrases with you all the time and look at it as often as possible. Listen to all the Xhosa you may hear during your day, write it down and then find out the translation. This keeps you actively involved in your learning.

NB If you know other people learning Xhosa, use Xhosa when speaking to them and/or make a regular time
to practice together.

Regular and steady reviewing is the key.

Self-study: Learning new words in stages –

  • First, go over what the words mean (from your notes)
  • Then, from the Xhosa words, try to remember the English
  • Next, from the English words, try to remember the Xhosa
  • Finally, see how many words you can come up with by yourself
  • Repeat the above stages from the top, until you are satisfied!

GOOD LUCK!
